Freeform orders “Alone Together” to series, starring Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo

Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo will star in a new TV sitcom ordered up by Freeform (the cable channel formerly known as ABC Family) called Alone Together.

Povitsky, a former Montreal New Face at Just For Laughs, appears as Maya in The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She’s also shown up in episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Lady Dynamite, New Girl, Love, and Workaholics.

Aflalo performed on the Comedy Dynamics/Hulu showcase, Coming to the Stage, and has written on The Burn with Jeff Ross, The Comedy Central Roast of James Franco, and The Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber, and Not Safe with Nikki Glaser.

Alone Together has them playing platonic best friends who desperately want acceptance from everyone else.

They originally made a short film, which appeared on Vimeo and Funny or Die, which later was refashioned as a TV pilot for Freeform — with The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer serving as executive producers alongside Billy Rosenberg and Hunter Covington.

“We are so proud of this series as it perfectly embodies the evolving Freeform brand and our dedication to programming for the 20-something viewer,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president, Programming and Development, Freeform. “Our audience will quickly fall in love as we did with real-life best friends Esther and Benji, who navigate a world of perfect 10s as self-proclaimed 6s.”

Here’s the original short film from 2015:
