HBO Comedy rebooting new editions of Tracey Ullman sketch, Def Comedy, plus stand-up hours from T.J. Miller, Pete Holmes and Jerrod Carmichael

HBO’s comedy brand is offering something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue for Fall 2016, announcing new editions of Tracey Ullman’s signature sketch comedy, a revamped Def Comedy showcase series from Russell Simmons, plus stand-up hours from Silicon Valley star T.J. Miller, Pete Holmes and Jerrod Carmichael.

Let’s break it down:

  • Jerrod Carmichael will tape his second special for the network this fall to debut in 2017. The special will be produced for HBO by A24. Jerrod Carmichael: Love at the Store debuted on HBO in 2014.
  • Pete Holmes: Faces and Sounds taped already, back in April at Chicago’s Vic Theatre, and will debut later in 2016. It’ll help establish him with HBO viewers in advance of his own starring series, Crashing, which wrapped production in NYC this summer and will debut in 2017.
  • T.J. Miller: Meticulously Ridiculous tapes Sept. 16 at the Paramount Theater in Denver, with a debut in 2017, most likely coinciding with the fourth-season return of Silicon Valley.
  • All Def Comedy tapes Sept. 7 at the Avalon Theatre in Los Angeles, with a November premiere planned. Tony Rock will host up-and-comers, executive produced by Russell Simmons, Jeru Tillman, Stan Lathan and Chris Conti; directed by Stan Lathan.
  • And Tracey Ullman’s Show will debut Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, with six all-new episodes of sketch comedy focused on Ullman and her characters, set in Britain. Among her impersonations in this series: Dame Judi Dench and Germany’s Angela Merkel. Ullman previous fronted four seasons of Tracey Takes On… for HBO.
