Stephen Colbert will cover Election Night 2016 LIVE for Showtime

Showtime’s David Nevins announced today to the TV Critics Association that Stephen Colbert will anchor his own live coverage of 2016 election results on the pay-TV network come Tuesday, Nov. 8.

CBS already is pre-empting The Late Show then because CBS News will air its own Election 2016 throughout the evening. And CBS Inc. owns both CBS and Showtime.

“We’re working very hard to do a live election night comedy special with Stephen Colbert,” Nevins said. “Stephen wants to do it, the studio wants to do it. The thought is, do a live special, Colbert unfettered. He promised me he’ll say a couple of curse words, which is important. We’re figuring it out. It’s something we’ve been trying to get him to do for a while.”

Just yesterday, CBS separately announced that Colbert would broadcast three more live editions of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert following two of the presidential debates and the one vice presidential debate — those will happen Monday, Sept. 26; Tuesday, Oct. 4; and Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Colbert’s live Late Shows during last month’s conventions generated his biggest buzz and YouTube clips since he launched last September — including Jon Stewart’s guest appearance and rant behind the desk, the return of “Stephen Colbert,” and Laura Benanti’s impersonation of Melania Trump.
