2016 TCA Awards honor black-ish, Rachel Bloom, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

Not to be confused with the Teen Choice Awards, the TCA Awards handed out over the weekend let us know what TV shows in this “Too Much TV” or “Peak TV” era have captured the hearts and minds of North America’s TV critics.

So if you thought your favorite TV series got snubbed by the Emmys or the Golden Globes, considering how much praise you’ve been reading in print or online this past year, then the TCAs perhaps will speak for you.

The 2016 awards, handed out during the halfway point of this summer’s TV Critics Association press tour in California, bestowed top honors to ABC’s black-ish for outstanding achievement in comedy series and Rachel Bloom for outstanding individual achievement in comedy for her starring work in The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Furthermore, the TCAs awarded Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on TBS with outstanding achievement in news and information.

Others singled out included Lily Tomlin for career achievement (Tomlin also will receive this year’s life achievement award from her fellows in SAG-AFTRA), and The Mary Tyler Moore Show for the association’s Heritage Award.

In other categories, the TCA Awards recognized The Americans (drama), Mr. Robot (new series), Sarah Paulson (individual achievement, drama), The People vs. O.J. Simpson (program of the year; also in movies, miniseries and specials), Making a Murderer (reality), Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (youth).
