TBS renews “The Detour” for season two ahead of series debut

It has become more commonplace now in our era of Too Much TV that cable and streaming networks have rewarded promising new series with two-season orders ahead of their premieres, and TBS has just done so today for The Detour.

TBS must have liked what it saw when viewers sampled The Detour‘s pilot in late-night previews after the March Madness basketball broadcasts, giving the show a 13-episode order for season two.

The Detour, starring Jason Jones and created, written and executive produced with his wife, Samantha Bee, premieres officially at 9 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016. It’s about a family road trip gone wrong.

You can hear Jason Jones and Samantha Bee tell The Comic’s Comic about their own very first vacation together in a special mini-sode of my podcast, Last Things First.

“I’m very excited to be going back to making my favorite show not yet on TV and look forward to making outrageous demands in my rider for the second season,” said Jones.

“Jason and Sam’s vision and execution of the first season was original and unexpected at every ridiculous turn,” said Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS. “Having Jason as executive producer, director and star really brought a definition to the voice of the characters and a realism to this family.”

The Detour co-stars Natalie Zea, Ashley Gerasimovich and Liam Carroll.

Here’s the full pilot online, too!
