HBO will broadcast the Quincy Jones stand-up special, thanks to Ellen DeGeneres

When Ellen DeGeneres invited comedian Quincy Jones onto her daytime talk show last week to talk about his dying wish to record a stand-up special, DeGeneres made an appeal to TV networks to pick it up for broader distribution.

“But what I want also, if someone from HBO is watching or somebody from Netflix is watching, this guy is hilarious,” DeGeneres said. “Why don’t you air it on HBO? Why don’t you put it on Netflix? You know? Somebody.”

HBO was listening. Perhaps it helps that both HBO and The Ellen DeGeneres Show are owned by TimeWarner. Whatever the reason, DeGeneres invited Jones back for today’s show to deliver the surprising good news.

HBO will air his stand-up special later this spring. He’s taping his first hour on April 4 at the Teregram Ballroom in Los Angeles.

DeGeneres also presented Jones with another $15,000 check from Shutterfly to cover production expenses, and made another appeal to her fans to support his Kickstarter.

The Kickstarter ended March 18 with $50,273 from 1,024 backers.
