Well, for two things, we’ve already had a ventriloquist win the $1 million prize and a headlining gig in Las Vegas (see: Terry Fator, season two), and last year, a magician won, so we’ve circled the comedy wagons to include people who include jokes in their acts. And we’ve seen stand-up comedians finish runner-up twice before (see: Taylor Williamson, season eight; and Tom Cotter, season seven).
Everything about Tuesday night’s live final performances on NBC seemed to indicate a funny person will win this 10th season of AGT, too.
Howie Mandel, one of the four celebrity judges, even said as much multiple times during the broadcast from Radio City Music Hall.
And just look at the lineup: Among the 10 finalists, two stand-up comedians (Gary Vider and Drew Lynch), a sarcastic indifferent magician in a childish dragon costume (Piff the Magic Dragon), a ventriloquist (Paul Zerdin), a straightforward comedic magician (Derek Hughes), a ladder daredevil who sometimes dresses like Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton (Uzeyer Novruzov), a professional regurgitator who goes by The Professional Regurgitator who has been wowing TV audiences since the 1980s (Stevie Starr), a mentalist — which is a fancy term for a magician whose magic trick is ESP (Oz Pearlman) and two singing acts (country singer Benton Blount, and duo The CraigLewis Band).
No dancing acts. No animals. No smoke and mirrors to compete with for these finalists.
Just themselves. Of course, that’s a lot more crazy competition this summer, considering the past few years saw the finalists reduced from 12 to six, allowing each of those finalists such as Williamson or Cotter multiple routines and chances to impress the judges and the live viewing audience. And less competition to split the vote.
Voting ended at 7 a.m. EDT, with the results announced tonight.
