Jim Gaffigan will perform stand-up comedy for Pope Francis

Jim Gaffigan will perform stand-up comedy for Pope Francis when the titular head of the Catholic Church visits Philadelphia later this month, and Gaffigan is even more surprised by it than you are.

Gaffigan is Catholic, and his wife “is Shiite Catholic,” as he likes to joke. He’ll perform live at the Festival of Families for Pope Francis on Saturday, Sept. 26, in a lineup hosted by Mark Wahlberg and also including performances by Aretha Franklin, Andrea Bocelli, The Fray. Juanes, Marie Miller, Matt Maher, Sister Sledge, and The Philadelphia Orchestra led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

“I am so humbled to receive this opportunity to perform in the presence of Pope Francis,” Gaffigan said in the press release announcing the event lineup Monday.

He spoke about the gig on Monday night’s Conan, where host Conan O’Brien jokingly wondered where his invite was for the Papal event.

Roll the clip.
