NBC fires “Coach” revival in pre-season

Don’t call it a comeback. That Coach reboot you didn’t think could possibly be a real thing is no longer a real thing, as NBC has pulled the plug on the revival of the 1980s ABC sitcom just as it had begun production.

NBC surprised almost everyone outside of Craig T. Nelson earlier this year when it ordered an updated Where Are They Now version of Coach straight to series, with 13 episodes from original series creator Barry Kemp looking at what the titular “Coach” and his cohorts were up to now. The sitcom originally aired on ABC from 1989-1997, airing 197 episodes.

The new version only had filmed a pilot episode before network executives decided to rethink the whole idea and call it quits once more.

Of course, just a month ago at the TV Critics Association summer tour, NBC Entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt still praised the idea of keeping Nelson, who most recently had sat at the head of the Parenthood table for the network, around for another go-around at “Coach.” Albeit with comments that could be jokes. Such as “One man’s practical joke is another man’s hit show,” and “if that works, then Alf … is next.”
