Last Things First, Episode #5: Marc Maron

The Comic's Comic Presents Last Things FirstToday’s guest is Marc Maron. Marc and I go back to the summer of 2001, when I interviewed him during the tour for his one-man show, “The Jerusalem Syndrome.” A lot has happened personally and professionally for both me and Marc since then – I remember visiting his garage to witness recording of one of the early episodes of his podcast, WTF with Marc Maron.

Click here for a sneak behind the scenes inside Maron’s garage in November 2009 for episode #26 of WTF as Maron interviewed Nick Kroll as “Chupacabra.”

When I caught up with him in the lobby of The Bowery Hotel, he was promoting the third season of his IFC series, Maron, and starting work on a new TV project for VICE. He since has welcomed President Barack Obama in his garage for a WTF podcast interview. He didn’t tell me that was in the offing when we chatted. But we’re good, all the same. You might be able to figure that out by listening to our very meta conversation.

“I think I knew from an early age that I wanted to be involved in entertainment,” Maron told me. “I knew I wanted to be a comic. I didn’t know how I’d go about that.”

He figured it out (and still is figuring it out), and begrudgingly (or not!) gave advice for any future aspiring comedian and/or podcaster to follow their path. But last things first, let’s follow Maron’s path to success. We talk opening lines, Maron’s first break at The Comedy Store, early road gigs, one-nighters and more.

If Maron doesn’t kill one of the other people talking and making noise in this hotel lobby first.

So let’s get to it!
