The Comic Strip on New York City’s Upper East Side opened for business 39 years ago this coming Monday: June 1, 1976.
From the start, the stand-up comedy club was a launching pad for some stellar careers, including Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano and Chris Rock.
Many more came through those doors, begging Lucien Hold to “pass” them as Comic Strip regulars or asking owner Richie Tienken to manage them. You could read a whole book of memories from the comics who played the Strip.
And now you can watch a 75-minute documentary reliving the greats and their great early moments as comedians. EAT, DRINK, LAUGH: The Story of The Comic Strip just became available to rent or buy this week on Vimeo on Demand.
From the trailer alone, you can see we’ll be treated to recollections from Larry Miller, Joe Piscopo, Ray Romano, Billy Crystal, Paul Reiser, Chris Rock, Bill Maher, Jay Leno, Colin Quinn, Carol Leifer, Gilbert Gottfried, Arsenio Hall, Richard Lewis, the late David Brenner, Susie Essman, Kevin Nealon and Elon Gold — plus footage from the likes of Murphy, Seinfeld, Tom Hanks (when he prepped for Punchline) and the late Robin Williams.
Roll the trailer!
