by For the first time in two years, MTV is getting back into the late-night talk show arena, announcing a series order with Big Breakfast for Middle of the Night Show, along with a weekly spin-off talker for Girl Code called Girl Code Live. Both announcements came late Tuesday during MTV’s Upfronts presentation to advertisers, among other series and pilot orders for the cable network formerly known for music television.
“We’re exploding our development process across screens – getting faster, more daring, putting more projects into play and taking bigger swings than ever,” said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV. “We’ve exponentially expanded the ways we connect with our audience and deliver for our advertisers.”
“This slate demonstrates the creative breadth of what MTV can do – epic scripted dramas, irreverent comedies, inventive format-driven series, fun topical talk shows, all with a distinct, youthful voice,” said Susanne Daniels, President of Programming for MTV.
This year’s Girl Code Live spinoff launches Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at 10:30 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, hosted by Carly Aquilino, Nessa and Awkwafina as a half-hour talk show with celebrity guests, musical artists, games and candid girl-talk in front of a live studio audience. Paul Ricci, Karen Frank and Ryan Ling are executive producers for MTV. Concept by Ryan Ling. The series is directed by Sarah de la O.
Middle of the Night Show brings CollegeHumor back together with MTV, as Big Breakfast production company’s first TV sale since being launched in Los Angeles as an evolution of CollegeHumor Originals. MTV previously hosted CollegeHumor’s first-ever TV effort, The CollegeHumor Show, in 2009.
It’ll premiere sometime this fall.
Its description, per MTV: “Middle of the Night Show” is a fast-paced reimagining of the late-night comedy talk show that brings it out of the studio and onto the streets of New York City. Each night the show’s crew and live band crash the bedroom of an unsuspecting celebrity who is forced to host a talk show on the spot without any preparation and on very little sleep. CollegeHumor’s Brian Murphy serves as the celebrity’s co-host and guide throughout the evening. “Middle of the Night Show” is produced by Big Breakfast, the production company behind CollegeHumor Originals. Executive Producers include Sam Reich, Spencer Griffin and Jon Cohen of Big Breakfast, and Paul Ricci and Dane Reiley of MTV. Brian Murphy will also serve as a Producer.
CollegeHumor first showcased a series of Midnight Talk Show Pranks back in 2011, ambushing the company’s own Dan Gurewitch in his bed with a full band, actor Scott Adsit and more.

MTV2, meanwhile, also recently ordered a new weekly late-night talker from Charlamagne called Uncommon Sense with Charlamagne Tha God, an eight-episode half-hour talk show hosted by Charlamagne.
