Employee of the Month: Jon Stewart, interviewed by Catie Lazarus

When Jon Stewart suddenly announced last week that he’d be stepping down from The Daily Show later this year, after almost 17 years hosting the late-night satirical news program on Comedy Central, many viewers and fans wanted more answers.

They’d get them Thursday night, when Stewart sat down for an in-depth interview as the guest on Employee of the Month, the talk show (and podcast) about work hosted by comedian Catie Lazarus.

Stewart joked about becoming a blogger for The Huffington Post, but before revealing his true intentions, Lazarus also asked him about his acting career and directing Rosewater.

“You shouldn’t stay somewhere, just because you can,” Stewart said about his decision to leave. He said he’ll miss making the show more than being on it.

Lazarus asked him about being a manager and a mentor to The Daily Show staff and its now-famous cast of alumni correspondents. About what’s next for the show when Stewart leaves? “What I want to see there is the next iteration of this idea,” he said. “I feel like the tributaries of my brain, combined with the rigidity of the format, I feel like I utilized every permutation of that that I could possibly use. You can only go so far with four facial expressions and five to seven curse words.”

Watch the full interview as Lazarus talked to Stewart before a live audience at Joe’s Pub in New York City.
