Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions signs four-movie deal exclusively with Netflix

Four of Adam Sandler’s upcoming films will only be seen on Netflix.

The streaming provider announced a deal today with Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions to be the exclusive home for four movies starring and produced by Sandler, who has grossed more than $3 billion at the box office so far over his career. The movies will premiere in all of Netflix’s worldwide sites.

“When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only. Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks,” Sandler said in a statement. “Let the streaming begin!!!!”

The deal does not cover any of Sandler’s current studio film commitments, which include the upcoming Pixels for Sony, and two films that debuted last month at the Toronto International Film Festival: The Cobbler, and Men, Women & Children.

“People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages — everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line — not just in the U.S. but all over the world,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

Sandler’s hits began with Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore and continued through The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Big Daddy, 50 First Dates and more. His most recent films, however — Jack & Jill, That’s My Boy, Grown Ups 2 and Blended — haven’t been quite so well received by critics or audiences.

It’ll be interesting to see if his new deal with Netflix opens up a more creative, bolder side to Sandler’s comedy, or if we’ll see movies that make us think of the mock productions that made him rich while haunting him as a character in Judd Apatow’s Funny People (see photo, above). Here’s hoping for the former.
