Dana Carvey promotes new Beyond The Comics animated bits on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Dana Carvey did many things to entertain you Thursday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Carson — from playing a “Wheel of Impressions” with Fallon (in which they both dusted off impersonations of Al Pacino and Arnold Schwarzenegger), to performing his “Choppin’ Broccoli” song that won him a spot on Saturday Night Live three decades ago, only this time also backed by an orchestra.

But if you follow Carvey on Twitter @danacarvey — and he’ll follow you back! — then you would have known last week that he also has a new “Church Lady” cartoon out.

Carvey told Fallon that it’s part of an animated webseries and newspaper comic strip “start-up” called Beyond The Comics. I don’t know how long you get to call something a start-up, because The Comic’s Comic wrote about former SNL head writer Fred Wolf’s Beyond The Comics enterprise back in 2010. With plenty of fellow former SNL cast members on board lending their voices to the toons, including David Spade, Kevin Nealon, Jack Handey (Deep Thoughts), Sarah Silverman, Chris Rock and Dennis Miller. You can check out Beyond The Comics in newspapers including The Denver Post and The Monterey Herald.

Here’s Carvey explaining it with another toon tease on Fallon.

And this is “Choppin’ Broccoli,” once more, in real-life.

And for a flashback, check out the opening of Dana Carvey’s SNL audition from 1986.

  1. Hi, what a great write up on Beyond The Comics, and I remember your previous write up, back when we first “beta” tested the comics in 6 newspapers a few years ago. I was blown away that you saw what we were trying to do back then, and really psyched/amazed that you wrote about it. You’re right, how long can you call something a “start up”…? But the newspaper transition to on-line has been slower than – I think – even they would like, let us, but we finally started in 75 newspapers, owned by Digital First Media, about 3 weeks ago, and Dana’s Tonight Show appearance on Thursday night was a bit of a “coming out” party for us, after all these years. Luckily, during those same years, we’ve been able to stockpile content and create a bunch of new stuff. We’ve had offers during that time to run our content on other hosting platforms, but I’ve always wanted to be a newspaper comic writer/artist, and if you read the “About Us” on our website, it’s true what is said about me, in regards to my talent in that regard!

I was wondering if you’d allow us to post your article on our website, which is (as Dana mentioned!) http://www.beyondthecomics.com, we just started it days before his appearance, and your article would be our first, in a new section where we will be featuring a bunch of “behind the scenes” stuff, etc. Maybe this isn’t something you allow, and I’m new to so much of this stuff — possibly why it’s taken so long to get the comics out there?? – but I would love it.
Fred Wolf PS, no relation, but wow, Michelle Wolf’s stand up was amazing — Great material. If she writes you, please let her know I thought it was fantastic. Every joke.

  2. Ohhhh, I thought this was a private email… Good Lord, I’ve got to learn this stuff, and fast. Um, anyhow, my question remains the same! And my compliment to Michelle.

    1. should read “…let ALONE us”, in first comment. Hope I don’t crash your site.
