But first: President Barack Obama came forward following a five-minute short film that featured Julia Louis-Dreyfus (HBO’s Veep) tooling around with actual VP Joe Biden, getting busted by First Lady Michelle Obama, getting tattoos with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and getting phone calls from House Speaker John Boehner. “After my stellar 2013, what could I possibly talk about?” Obama quipped, wondering how he’d open with traditional self-deprecating remarks. He had aides bring out two ferns in a nod to his “Between Two Ferns” appearance with Zach Galifianakis. Then, onto the zingers!
Some good roast-type jokes slung at CNN, MSNBC and FOX News. Is this the time and place for any of this? Is there ever an appropriate time?
Joel McHale, of NBC’s Community and E!’s The Soup, took to the podium and had a lot of Chris Christie jokes to tell. The audience in the room enjoyed the C-SPAN jokes and the nod to D.C. as a trendsetter for crack-smoking Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. President Hillary Clinton could save us money? YES! The healthcare.gov co-opting of “Britta” as a pejorative, without ever saying Britta? Missed opportunity. Everything else? You be the judge. Except for the Christie joke about 10 minutes in: That one’s a classic.
