Comedy Central hires Michael Che as correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

When Michael Che abruptly cancelled his planned Edinburgh run for this summer, he told fans he had good reason for it.

That reason?

Che will start work in June as the newest correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

He’ll finish his first full season as a writer on Saturday Night Live, which wraps up on May 17; then he’s booked for a May 25 gig at Toomler Theater in Amsterdam, followed by a six-night run at the Soho Theatre in London (May 27-June 1).

“But I start when I come back from London and Amsterdam,” Che told The Comic’s Comic.

Che taped his first half-hour stand-up special for Comedy Central just a month ago; it’ll air later this spring/early summer, and serve as a great cross-promotional introduction to him for The Daily Show‘s fans.

Che was named one of Variety’s 10 Comics To Watch last summer, back when he was part of VH1’s reboot of Best Week Ever — where he hosted a recurring segment called “Michael Che’s 2-Minute Talk Show.”

Here’s a clip of Che’s faux talk show on VH1’s BWE from last April, with guests Hanson (and Nick Turner as Che’s musical sidekick).

That wasn’t enough to get him the Daily Show gig, though.

“I tested for them,” Che told The Comic’s Comic. “I wrote a piece and ran it with Jon in the studio. It was a lot of fun. That would’ve been enough. But they decided to put a ring on it.”

Congratulations, Michael Che, on your new engagement!
