Nick Kroll, Stanley Cup #Cupnapper, in NBC Sports NHL promotional campaign

Nick Kroll has made fun of Canada plenty before on Comedy Central’s Kroll Show (see Wheels Ontario; Show Us Your Songs, Toronto), but this time he’s taken the nation up north’s ultimate trophy and playing keep away with it.

Kroll posted this photo last week of himself in his New York Rangers jersey with the Stanley Cup behind him, guarded by Charlie Sanders. All he wrote as a caption? “Uh oh…”

That’s already more to go on than this brand-new video put out by NBC Sports about the Cupnappers. You wouldn’t even know Kroll and his funny friends are in on it!

His reps tell The Comic’s Comic there will be one official video with Kroll and his friends — also including Seth Morris — to come out next week.

Until then, there’s this:

Because that’s a silly fake news report by the supposedly professional news people at NBC and CNBC.

“We always are hypersensitive to making it clear it’s something of a farce and not real,” said Bill Bergofin, vice president of marketing for NBC Sports Group. Bergofin told Variety that the campaign aims to get people talking about the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs — to “try to create these cultural tipping points around our events.”

This spot and more are scheduled to roll out across the NBCUniversal family of TV channels on April Fool’s Day.

UPDATED APRIL 1 with said video:

Now if the NBA also somehow managed to tap Kroll’s Ref Jeff in time for tip-off of the NBA Playoffs this spring, that’d be the daily double!

In the meantime, here’s another shot from Kroll Show on ice.
