by Carol Burnett received the 16th annual Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor for 2013.
Held in Washington, D.C., at The Kennedy Center in October, and broadcast Sunday night on PBS, the all-star cast who paid tribute to Burnett included Julie Andrews, Lucie Arnaz, Tony Bennett, Tim Conway, Tina Fey (herself a past winner of the Twain Prize), Rashida Jones, Vicki Lawrence, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Bruce Vilanch and Rosemary Watson.
Burnett, 80, burst on the scene in a big way in 1959 with the original Broadway musical production of Once Upon a Mattress, and the cast of TV’s The Garry Moore Show. She was the star of her CBS sketch comedy series The Carol Burnett Show from 1967-1978, and previously won eight Golden Globes, six Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, induction into the Television Hall of Fame and the Kennedy Center Honors.
