David Spade to record first stand-up comedy special in 15 years, for Comedy Central

Comedy Central confirmed today that David Spade will be recording his a new one-hour stand-up comedy special this year — Spade’s first in 15 years.

The acerbic comedian and former SNL star has been seen most recently on the big screen in the movie sequel, Grown Ups 2, and on the small screen in Rules of Engagement, which ended a seven-season, 100-episode run on CBS this spring and continues in syndication on TBS and elsewhere.

Spade, 49, appeared first on HBO’s Young Comedians Special back in 1989, his big break before Saturday Night Live (fun facts: Rob Schneider also performed on that young comedians special, hosted by Dennis Miller). His only previous stand-up special, David Spade: Take The Hit, aired in 1998 for HBO.

He did, however, perform a few years ago in conjunction with the Judd Apatow-Adam Sandler movie, Funny People, in the “Funny People Live” special. Here’s a clip from that:

And just earlier this month, Spade unveiled a new webseries for Funny or Die, “Inappropriate Pilot Outtakes.” For viewers of a certain age, it’ll take you back to his flight attendant sketches on SNL. Only the opposite of that, because as a pilot, he’s much friendlier. Buh-bye. Oh, it’s also very inappropriate or Not Safe For Work. Buh-bye.

His new special, tentatively titled “My Fake Problems,” is based off of bit of his from recent years. As he explained his life and work situation to Vegas.com in a 2009 interview: “These fall under the category of fake problems,” says Spade. “No one really wants to hear about it. I mean, you can’t really complain about this stuff, it’s more like – it’s nothing – I can’t even talk about it. It’s like when a girl complains that she’s too pretty. I’m just a little tired … going from one thing to another. It’s all good, I’m just tired.”
