The long, short, big and tall of it all: ABC’s “Splash” asks Louie Anderson, Kareem & more to take a dive

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the pool…

ABC, which used to bring us Superstars on Saturday mornings a generation ago, is broadening the definition of athlete and celebrity while also narrowing the pool of athletic competitions to the diving pool with the debut next week of Splash.

Which is how we get to see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hall of Fame basketball player and noted comedic actor/watcher of both past (Airplane!) and present (Girls), climb the ladder for the 10-meter platform dive.

And also how we’re treated to the sight of comedian Louie Anderson and Chelsea Lately sidekick Chuy in swimsuits. UPDATED 3/13/13: TMZ has reported, with photo evidence, that Chuy has broken bones in his left foot and has had to withdraw from the TV series!

Well, more like shirts and knee-length shorts. But what were you expecting, Speedos? Were you expecting Speedos? You have access to PhotoShop if you’d like to see them in Speedos. Stop typing Speedos.

Can’t stop, won’t stop with the Harlem Shake videos. And the cast of ABC’s Splash (sans Chuy) made one of those, too. From the looks of it, that’s Kareem in the mask at the beginning, while Katherine Webb is working on Louie Anderson’s muscles. Roll the clip.

One of the official promos for the series also goes big on Louie.

The rest of the cast includes Keshia Knight Pulliam, Drake Bell, Nicole Eggert, Kendra Wilkinson, Rory Bushfield, and Ndamukong Suh. ABC’s Splash premieres March 19, 2013.
