Comedians vie to join boys of summer as finalists for 2013 MLB Fan Cave

Football season is over. Long live football.

Which means Americans can turn their attention later this February to the phrase “pitchers and catchers report” for another Spring Training for Major League Baseball.

For the second straight season, MLB will let fans rule the roost at the MLB Fan Cave in New York City’s Greenwich Village — a home office at 4th Street and Broadway where die-hard baseball fans called “Cave Dwellers” will attempt to watch every game of the season from March 31’s Opening Night game (Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros) through October’s World Series. Along the way, the cave will host concerts, celebrities and other events for fans — if you’re not literally near the cave, you can follow all of the activity on Facebook and Twitter (@MLBFanCave).

At least four comedians from NYC are among the 52 finalists you can vote for in the 2013 MLB Fan Cave contest.

Sam Dingman (hometown: Brooklyn; team: Baltimore Orioles)

Sam Dingman is a performer at The People’s Improv Theater in NYC, where he has performed with house improv team Local 154. Dingman also performs in the sketch group Audience of Two. Dingman, 30, also is an administrative assistant at Google.

Eitan Levine (hometown: New York, NY; team: New York Mets)

Eitan Levine, 23, is from Springfield, NJ, and a Mets fan. Levine hosts a sports-talk comedy show at The PIT, and while abroad in Israel in 2008, won that nation’s “Last Comic Standing” contest.

Nick Mendillo (hometown: New York, NY; team: Boston Red Sox)

Nick Mendillo moved to NYC from Rhode Island in 2008, and shot footage outside the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox stadium for his MLB Fan Cave submission video. Mendillo studies and performs with the UCB.

Ben Wietmarschen (hometown: Cincinnati; team: Cincinnati Reds)

Ben Wietmarschen, 28, says he works on a lobster roll food truck! He also is a co-star and co-writer of the UCB stage show, “The Honeymen Present: A Salute to Honey,” as well as a writer for UCB Maude house sketch team, Fambly.

Voting for the MLB Fan Cave 2013 continues through Feb. 13, with the top 30 contestants receiving invites to Spring Training to audition further.

If you know of any other comedians among the 52 finalists, please let us know. Thanks!
