30 Rock’s Liz Lemon lives on as Ben & Jerry’s fro-yo flavor

When Ben & Jerry’s announced earlier this week that it’d unveil a new ice cream flavor for NBC’s 30 Rock, in fans came up with all sorts of guesses based on foods shown and mentioned during the sitcom’s seven-season run, from cute to clever to too cute by half.

The much simpler answer stared right back at them: Liz Lemon.

Liz Lemon forever, meet Liz Lemon fro yo.

Neither 30 Rock nor Liz Lemon ever were trendy, but as the award-winning sitcom went off the air Thursday night, its protagonist as played by its star and creator, Tina Fey, couldn’t have been trendier. As a Ben & Jerry’s flavor, her legacy will be sold in stores as a lemon Greek frozen yogurt with a blueberry lavender swirl.  It’ll show up in the company’s scoop shops this month, then in grocers and convenience stores this spring, with proceeds benefiting JumpStart, an early-education that Fey has supported.

“We are always looking for a fun way to serve up a Ben & Jerry’s flavor, and when the R&D team came up with a lemon-based Greek Frozen Yogurt there was only one name on the list,” said Jody Eley, Ben & Jerry’s marketing manager. “We’ve found the perfect fit, and we’re so excited for the launch of Liz Lemon as a full time flavor homage to one of the most enduring characters on television.”

Ben & Jerry’s has a rich history of working with NBC and specifically Lorne Michaels programs on that network — creating and selling Late Night Snack for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, as well as a limited-edition Schweddy Balls flavor for the Saturday Night Live sketch made famous by guest host and 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin. It also makes Stephen Colbert’s AmeriCone Dream.
