It began as an off-handed joke and became a 10-year-long running joke. “Apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time.” That’s how Jimmy Kimmel ended his late-night episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live, sometimes varying the wording a bit each weeknight on ABC.

Until last night.

When, upon his 10 years in late night and first month in the 11:35 p.m. time slot, Kimmel not only had Matt Damon on the show, but allowed Damon to take the entire show over as a hostage. So to speak. Kimmel spent the hour tied up in a chair as Damon hosted Jimmy Kimmel Sucks.

Ben Affleck was there. Of course he was. But oh, the stars who came out for Matt Damon’s show. Robin Williams delivered the monologue. Sheryl Crow led the band. Andy Garcia played the role of Guillermo and played up his accent. Damon welcomed as guests Nicole Kidman (who grinded on Kimmel’s lap on her way out to the set), Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore. And Damon’s final guest was Sarah Silverman, Kimmel’s ex-girlfriend with whom Damon had appeared years earlier in the video, “I’m Fucking Matt Damon.”

Such a great idea executed great. Earns my vote for permanent guest host. Whenever Kimmel wants to take the night off, make it a spectacular all-star special.

The opening.

Ben Affleck tries to help Kimmel out in the opening.

So Robin Williams steps in for jokes. And did you know Robin joined Twitter this week? @RobinWilliams. How do you like them apples?

Here we learn that the “real” reason for snubbing Damon before was that Kimmel lost out for every film role Damon had. Featuring Emily Blunt and Greg Kinnear!

Next Damon introduced his other changes, replacing Guillermo and Cleto with Andy Garcia and Sheryl Crow.

Damon didn’t need it, but here are celebrities offering video testimonials for him. Pep talk!

Now onto the guests…seriously, check out Nicole Kidman’s impromptu lap dance for Kimmel!

Gary Oldman and Amy Adams:

You can’t throw a rock in Hollywood without hitting an Oscar winner. Such as Reese Witherspoon!

Demi Moore’s turn.

Sarah Silverman compares dating Jimmy Kimmel to eating a New York City hot dog from a street vendor. Ouch!
