Comedy Headlines for 1/9/13

What’s happening in the comedy world now…

  • Justin Bieber will return to Saturday Night Live for another visit, but this time as musical guest and host on Feb. 9, 2013. Bieber had performed on SNL in 2010 when Tina Fey hosted and also had appeared in a sketch during that episode.
  • Earwolf will debut a new podcast on Thursday, Jan. 10, from Jeff Garlin. “By the Way, In Conversation with Jeff Garlin” was recorded before live audiences at Largo in Los Angeles and will be released via Earwolf twice a month.
  • CollegeHumor has launched an Average Student Scholarship Contest, which, as Jesse Thorn pointed out, isn’t all that unusual for anyone who has ever applied for the David Letterman Scholarship at Ball State (Letterman’s alma mater) — or, for that instance, any student at a less-competitive university?
  • MSG Entertainment and the Garden of Dreams Foundation announced additions to the lineup for its special Garden of Laughs event on Jan. 26, 2013, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Among the additions: Whoopi Goldberg, Adam Graves, John Leguizamo, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, John McEnroe, Brooke Shields, Steve Schirripa, Tony Sirico, Jon Starks and Justin Tuck. Bob Costas is hosting, with stand-up performances by Adam Ferrara, Darrell Hammond, Robert Klein, Brian Regan, Ray Romano, and Wanda Sykes. The evening will benefit the Garden of Dreams Foundation, which works with all areas of The Madison Square Garden Company, including MSG Entertainment, the Knicks, the Rangers, the Liberty, MSG Networks and Fuse to make dreams come true for children facing obstacles. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
  • Canadian-based City is producing a 13-episode animated series, Mother Up!, starring Eva Longoria. It’ll air in Canada this fall, and available in the U.S. via Hulu.

News from the TCA winter press tour:

FOX

  • The In Living Color reboot is dead. At least with the cast that filmed two episodes in 2012. Kevin Reilly said he remains open to trying again with the sketch comedy franchise later.
  • Goodwin Games, co-starring T.J. Miller, won’t air as a midseason replacement because there’s no time slot available yet for it to replace an existing sitcom. FOX only airs live-action human sitcoms on Tuesdays (and animated sitcoms on Sundays), and Reilly didn’t want to rock the boat on FOX’s Tuesday lineup until all four of those series run out of original episodes. So. Maybe summer?
