Comedians nominated for the 55th annual Grammy Awards

Nominations came out last night for the 55th annual Grammy Awards, to be handed out Feb. 10, 2013, on CBS.

In the Best Comedy Album category, we have:

Mr. Universe, Jim Gaffigan [Comedy Central Records]

Rize Of The Fenix, Tenacious D [Columbia Records]

Rize of the Fenix - Tenacious D

Snap judgments. Jim Gaffigan first self-released his 2012 disc and really pushed his stand-up last year. Jimmy Fallon’s disc is a culmination of special above-and-beyond efforts on his Late Night TV show. And wasn’t Margaret Cho’s “Cho Dependent” already nominated for a Grammy two years ago? Yes. Yes, it was. That year, she was competing against Lewis Black and Kathy Griffin. Go figure. Sometimes it feels like Grammy voters don’t even cast their nets.

As for other comedians nominated for Grammys in this year’s eligibility period…

Best Spoken Word Album: Ellen DeGeneres landed a nod for reading her stream-of-consciousness book. She’s competing with the First Lady, Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, Rachel Maddow and Janis Ian.

Seriously… I’m Kidding, Ellen DeGeneres [Hachette Audio]

David Alan Grier is part of the Best Musical Theater Album category for his contributions to the recent revival of “The Gershwins’ Porgy And Bess.”

The Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media category (opened up for things not movies) includes Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (updated: WINNER!) as well as The Muppets movie reboot.

And in the Best Song written for Visual Media, Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords wasn’t just Oscar-recognized, he’s also now Grammy-recognized for his opus, “Man Or Muppet,” as sung by Jason Segel and muppet Walter.

Anyone you feel should have been noticed here?

  1. Are they Serious?! What an AWFUL list! I’ll give you Jim Gaffigan and Lewis Black (Though that was far from Black’s best album) But the rest are horrendous choices! Were 90% of the voters gay? Not that there is anything wrong with being gay, but Cho is just a fag hag that panders to her crowd, rarely being funny, and never being insightful. Kathy Griffin is just, UGH! Yet another fag hag. And Tenacious D though I love them as people are hit and miss, mostly miss.

What about Bill Burr: You People Are All The Same?
What about Louis C.K.: Live at The Beacon?
Just discovered Chad Daniels: As Is

Probably another half a dozen better choices this year than what they put out there
