Comedy Headlines for 10/29/12

What’s happening in the comedy world now…

  • G4 announced late Friday that it would cancel its most popular live programming, Attack of the Show, at the end of 2012. The Monday-Friday live weeknight show launched in 2005. AOTS covered pop culture, made Olivia Munn a household name, gave Chris Hardwick and his Nerdist buddies a regular TV platform, broadcast live from Comic-Con in San Diego and made that a much bigger deal, and used to be produced by Gavin Purcell before he helped give life to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. A rotating lineup of guest co-hosts like John Barrowman, Michael Ian Black, Josh Myers, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and Horatio Sanz will join AOTS hosts Candace Bailey and Sara Underwood for its final weeks.
  • The Onion quits New York City entirely by ending its print edition in America’s largest city and metropolitan area. The humor newspaper and online site moved out of NYC earlier this year to decamp in Chicago. “Our focus in recent years has been on the digital side of our business,” said Steve Hannah, President and CEO of The Onion, “and both The Onion and A.V. Club have expanded their audiences. We have every reason to believe this growth will continue. Meanwhile, we never forget that our roots are in print, and we do everything possible to support our franchise partners around the country. Unlike cities like Providence or Chicago or Denver or Austin, we have been unable to find a franchise partner in New York, a very crowded and competitive market for print advertising. If a viable partner emerged, we would be eager to resurrect print in New York. Unlike a lot of mainstream publications, we have never had a problem with readership.” Ugh.
  • Todd Glass and Moshe Kasher both debuted their new stand-up specials online only via Netflix Instant. If you’re a subscriber, enjoy!
  • Bradley Whitford and Malin Ackerman will co-star in ABC’s single-cam pilot Trophy Wife.
