Somali comedian killed who made fun of Islamist fighters

Hecklers are nothing compared to the threats comedians face in other parts of the world — the latest example of such occurring earlier this week in Somalia, where comedian and radio presenter Abdi Jeylani Malaq Marshale was shot dead.

Marshale (pictured above left) often impersonated Islamist fighters and had recently retreated into exile, prompted by threats from al-Shabab.

He was shot in the head and chest after leaving a local radio station.

“This is a black day for the entire entertainment industry, he was a leader in Somalia comedy and everybody liked his performance,” said Yusuf Keynan, a presenter at Kulmiye radio, where Marshale worked.
