Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) earns a 2012 MTV VMA nomination

Eddie Murphy may have had a hit song back in the day with “Party All the Time” and even hosted the MTV Video Music Awards in 1985, too — but Murphy couldn’t accomplish what Community’s Donald Glover already has in his spare time away from comedy: Score his own VMA nomination.

Glover, who raps under the moniker Childish Gambino, is up for Best Hip-Hop Video for the video to his song, “Heartbeat.” His category:

Best Hip-Hop Video

  • Childish Gambino, “Heartbeat”
  • Drake feat. Lil Wayne, “HYFR”
  • Kanye West feat. Pusha T, Big Sean & 2 Chainz, “Mercy”
  • Watch the Throne, “Paris”
  • Nicki Minaj feat. 2 Chainz, “Beez in the Trap”

Glover responded to the nod on Twitter, writing: “thank you @MTV for the VMA nomination. best wake up in a while”

The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday, Sept. 6. You can vote for your favorites in any of the VMA categories at  VMA.MTV.com now through Aug. 24.

Now, here’s Donald Glover as Childish Gambino, getting it on in the music video for “Heartbeat.” Roll it!
