Amazon.com now accepting your original comedy series pitches

Whereas online video sites such as my colleagues at My Damn Channel, or lesser-known but well-funded operations such as Revision3 or Sony’s Crackle, have been pumping out original webseries for years now to compete with old-school TV, we’ve begun seeing new content come out of the heavy-hitter sites that had built their brands on redistributing TV and movie content.

Sites such as Hulu, Netflix, and now here comes Amazon.com.

Amazon Studios announced yesterday that it would begin original comedy proposals (as well as children’s programming) online. From the press release…

“Amazon Studios wants to discover great talent and produce programming that audiences will love,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios. “In the course of developing movies, we’ve heard a lot of interest from content creators who want to develop original series in the comedy and children’s genres. We are excited to bring writers, animators and directors this new opportunity to develop original series.”

How it works:

If you’d like info in written form instead of pretty post-it notes, then visit the Amazon Studios TV writers info page.

There you’ll see that you need…

  • A pilot script
This should be the series at its best, but not necessarily an origin story.
How long should my script be? We encourage single-cam (single-spaced) scripts to be 36 pages or fewer; multi-cam (double-spaced) scripts, 54 pages or fewer.
  • A mini-bible
This should describe the series in general, and its main characters; tell where the series is going and whether episodes are serial or standalone; and include five or six episode ideas.
How long should my mini-bible be? Between two and six pages.

Does that sound like something that interests you? Then find out more and try your luck at becoming an Amazon Studios show creator/writer!
