NBC looks to old “Friends,” Matthew Perry, with first 2012-2013 series order: “Go On”

The big four broadcast networks usually are coy when it’s still three to four weeks before their official Upfronts debut presentations to advertisers, but NBC isn’t wasting time, at least with former Friends star Matthew Perry.

The Peacock Network announced today that it’d ordered Perry’s latest sitcom venture, Go On, to series for the 2012-2013 season.

How many episodes, and whether/where it lands on the primetime schedule in fall or in midseason, is something that still will have to be worked out.

Go On

Oh, right. Perry will star as a sportscaster who finds himself in mandatory group therapy sessions. Co-stars include Julie White, Suzy Nakamura, Laura Benati, Allison Miller and Khary Payton. It’s brought to NBC by Scott Silveri, who worked with Perry as an executive producer on Friends — and yet also created the spinoff, Joey. It’s planned as a single-camera sitcom.

Perry’s last try at top-lining a sitcom was the ABC midseason replacement Mr. Sunshine, which lasted nine of its 13 episodes last spring before cancellation). He has worked with NBC since Friends, though, as you may recall his role on the not-quite 30 Rock, not-quite SNL look behind the scenes of SNL, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

Expect this early series order to trigger a wave of orders in the next few days from the other networks — particularly on the sitcom side — as the new shows all need to hire new writers, producers and other staffers.
