Owen Benjamin takes off on 30-day #funnyonthefly mission with Southwest Airlines

Many people will take flight today for business or pleasure, but only comedian Owen Benjamin is doing it for both, and will keep flying the friendly skies for the next 30 days.

What’s the catch? It’s a promotion for Lenovo’s IdeaPad Tablet K1 and Southwest Airines.

Two summers ago, Mark Malkoff lived aboard a commercial aircraft for 30 days and nights. Malkoff had set a Guinness World Record for most flight segments, visiting 38 cities during 135 flights covering 109,000 miles.

Owen Benjamin (@owenben), who will be Tweeting his experience daily @funnyonthefly in addition to posting updates on YouTube and Flickr at www.flyingfunny.com, wrote yesterday, “Flyingfunny.com leaving this morning to do this for a month. I’ve always wanted a world record.” He’s going for the record of most airports visited in a month.

Don’t be surprised if you see him on any Southwest flight from today through Dec. 20. as he goes for the record.

He’ll also be performing “Layover Laughter” five-minute stand-up sets for his fellow passengers, and giving people a chance to win his accumulated frequent flier points. Lenovo and Southwest also have giveaway contests in coordination with his stunt.

Says Benjamin: “As a comedian, I like to inject the fun in every situation. With Funny on the Fly, I’m taking that to a whole new level, hopping from Southwest terminal to terminal with nothing but a few good laughs, my IdeaPad Tablet K1 and a carry-on. And when I’m not doing standup, I stay productive with the Tablet K1 by recording new ideas for upcoming comedy sets, downloading movie scripts, watching videos, and even tweeting sweet pics of my dog Benny.”

He also recorded a video while preparing to start his monthlong mission. Roll it.
