Seth Meyers and Matt Damon remind us Red Sox fans, back from 2002: It’s not our fault

I had a tough time wanting to do much of anything on Thursday after the 2011 Boston Red Sox completed a massive September collapse by blowing a ninth-inning lead with two outs and two strikes on the Orioles, while at the same exact time, the Tampa Bay Rays came back with two outs and two strikes against them in the ninth inning against the New York Yankees. The Rays are in the MLB playoffs. The Sox are out.

But Hulu.com knew how to make me feel better, putting this SNL Weekend Update segment from 2002 on its home page, as Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers and award-winning actor Matt Damon — both devoted Red Sox fans — tried to make Yankees fans feel better way back in Season 28, Episode 1 (Oct. 5, 2002) after the Yankees failed to make it to the World Series for the first time since 1997 by reminding them and us about the plight of the Red Sox fan. To a generation who only knew the Red Sox since 2004, welcome to our world.

And after the devastating 2003 ALCS, I wrote a piece (alongside my Arizona Republic Cubs fan Joe Reaves — who had to deal with Bartman!) about how we both remained optimistic that one day our fandom would be rewarded. Still so fortunate and grateful for 2004. And 2007. And now this gentle reminder of what once was the life of generations of Red Sox fan, from my grandfather and father to me.
