by Today during the TCA summer tour for America’s TV Critics Association, Showtime announced it had ordered 10 half-hour episodes of a comedy interview series, Laughing Stock, hosted by David Steinberg and executive produced by Steve Carell.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because Steinberg, who turns 69 on Aug. 9, hosted a comedy interview series called Sit Down Comedy with David Steinberg from 2005-2007 on TV Land.
For this latest venture, Showtime announced a roster of comedians including Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Don Rickles, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Larry David, Ellen DeGeneres, Judd Apatow, Tina Fey, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman would participate in the series. Steinberg’s own site for Showtime’s Laughing Stock, however, hints at even more participants — Alan Zweibel and Larry David, Ben Stiller, Bill Maher, Billy Crystal, Bob Saget, Bonnie Hunt, David Koechner, Dick Van Dyke, Drew Carey, Garry Shandling, Jon Lovitz, Kathy Najimy, Kevin Pollak, Larry Miller, Martin Short, Paula Poundstone, Richard Lewis, Stephen Fry, Steven Wright, Tim Conway, Tommy Smothers, and the late Robert Schimmel.
“We have gathered a monumental assortment of comedic legends, and their contemporary protégées,” said Carell. “It’s enlightening, fascinating, but more importantly, it’s funny.”
“What makes our show unique is you will see the comedian’s connections to each other and to those who have influenced them in the past,” said Steinberg. “It’s like getting a look at a comedy tree of the last five decades.”
Look for the series to debut in early 2012.
