Jeff Garlin and Michael Moore offer testimonials for their lineup in 2nd Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival

The Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival opens up its second year of performances tonight in Traverse City, Mich. And if you're thinking that northern Michigan (not to be confused with Upper Peninsula Michigan) is an odd place for a comedy festival in February, then just remember that it's located across Lake Michigan from Green Bay, Wisc. Oh, and also, it's curated by Jeff Garlin and Michael Moore as an offshoot of the city's film fest. They've assembled a good lineup for the 2011 TCCAF schedule, too. Bob Saget performs tonight after the opening party. Patton Oswalt, Caroline Rhea, Jeffrey Ross, Ted Alexandro and Joe DeRosa, Brett Gelman and Aubrey Plaza all will be there. A Sunday filled with Coen Brothers comedies on film. Well, why I don't just let Garlin and Moore explain it? Because they did just that in an open letter a few days ago, which I'm reprinting for your enjoyment. Hey, Jeff Garlin here. And Michael Moore. We‚Äôd like to let you in on the comedians we‚Äôve asked to come to next weekend‚Äôs Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival. We‚Äôve invited them ‚Äôcause they‚Äôre some of the funniest people we know. Jeff Garlin: And they each paid us a handsome sum in Canadian gold to be part of this. Michael Moore: Which had NOTHING to do with our decision to bring them. Besides, what good is ‚ÄúCanadian gold‚Äù anyway? Jeff: I...

Kathy Griffin redefining “limited run” on Broadway with “Kathy Griffin Wants A Tony”

If Kathy Griffin were performing eight nights at Carolines on Broadway, it'd be considered just another week in the life of a comedy club. Even though Carolines is on Broadway. But move Griffin a few blocks south and another block east, and suddenly, it's "Kathy Griffin Wants A Tony," a limited-run Broadway show at the Belasco Theatre on West 44th Street. The "one-woman show" will be exactly like her stand-up, meaning riffs on celebrity encounters and topical tabloid culture, with shows from March 11-13 and March 15-19. In her official statement, Griffin said: ‚ÄúWhile I have been asked to understudy for Spider-Man and take over for Al when he has finished his run in ‚ÄòThe Merchant of Venice,‚Äô instead I have decided to take my very own show to Broadway.‚Äù Nothing added about whether Bravo will be filming this for one of her scheduled four new stand-up specials to air on the cable channel in 2011. WEtv green-lights “reality” series for Sinbad, red-lights similar series for Tammy Pescatelli

WEtv announced today that it had ordered a new series that depicts the life of comedian Sinbad and his family, called Sinbad's Family Affair. The six one-hour episodes will premiere at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12. ‚ÄúSinbad‚Äôs story is one of second chances. It‚Äôs remarkable and heartwarming, but not without its drama, conflict and chaos,‚Äù said John Miller, senior vice president, original productions & development, WE tv and Wedding Central. ‚ÄúThis is a Modern Family that‚Äôs reunited and they‚Äôre dealing with the emotions and issues that come along with that. It‚Äôs what viewers will see more of on WE tv, and women will be able to connect with this story and this family, either from their own experiences or those of people in their life.‚Äù Meanwhile, in that same time slot currently on the network, WEtv has taken Tammy Pescatelli's series, A Stand-Up Mother, off the air after only two episodes. Pescatelli and her fans have gone online to try to rally support to bring the show back. In its place, the network is airing repeats of the Joan Rivers series, Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best? On its Facebook page, WE tv reps wrote just minutes ago: "Hey Everyone! Thanks for all your comments about "A Standup Mother". We hear you, and we want the show to come back soon too! The show is currently on hiatus and will be...

Meet Me In New York: Hari Kondabolu

What do they say about New York City: There are eight million stories, and sometimes it seems as though eight million of the people telling them think they're comedians? No, that's not it. It is a fact, though, that America's biggest city is also its biggest comedy mecca. Hollywood may be Hollywood, but New York City is where comedians are born funny, become funny or arrive to thrust their funny upon us. I think we should meet some of these people. This is a new recurring feature, a mini-profile of newcomers, up-and-comers and overcomers of New York's vibrant comedy scene. It's called Meet Me In New York. Hari Kondabolu and I shared a condo in Aspen four Februarys ago. Wait. That sounds weird. Hari Kondabolu is a funny stand-up comedian who's from New York City, but spent time away from the city to develop his comedy skills before coming back. Now look at him. Specifically on Friday, you can look at him when Comedy Central debuts his first half-hour Comedy Central Presents. Let's get to know him better.  Name: Hari KondaboluArrival date: December 2008 Arrived from: Seattle When and where did you start performing comedy? I did standup for the first time on January 14, 2000, when I was a 17-year old senior at Townsend Harris High School in Flushing, Queens. I started a comedy night called "Comedy Night" and closed it out with...
