67th annual Golden Globe nominations in comedy

The Golden Globe Awards nominations just came out for its 67th annual edition, and someone put HBO's True Blood in drama? Now that's funny. Here's what else the typically-offbeat Hollywood Foreign Press Association thought of American movies and TV from the year that is and soon will be was 2009.

In movies, the HFPA puts comedies in a separate category with musicals, which is nice; nicer still for these nominees: 500 Days of Summer, The Hangover, It's Complicated, Julie & Julia, and Nine. In the main acting categories, it's musicals and romcoms for the ladies, with Sandra Bullock (The Proposal), Julia Roberts (Duplicity) and Meryl Streep getting honored twice in one category (It's Complicated, as well as Julie & Julia). Mo'Nique did, as expected, get nominated in the supporting actress category for her dramatic turn in Precious. On the men's side, the comedy/music actor award is up for grabs among Matt Damon (The Informant), Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes), Joseph Gordon-Leavitt (500 Days of Summer) and Michael Stuhlbarg (for the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man). Sorry, guys from The Hangover. You do get to show up for the big award, though. Good luck, fellas!

And in case you're curious, the best animated feature films up for Golden Globes are Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Princess and the Frog, and Up.

As for TV comedies…well. The foreign press is in love with Glee, which cut into a lot of the comedy action. And HBO's Eastbound & Down continues to get snubbed. Snubbed, I say! While HBO's Entourage somehow is still up for best comedy. We live in parallel bizarro worlds.

The best comedy nominees — 30 Rock, Entourage, Glee, Modern Family, and The Office — also shut out CBS.

Neil Patrick Harris did get a supporting actor nomination for being the best thing in How I Met Your Mother, where he's up against Entourage's Jeremy Piven and three dramatic performances. Nothing for The Big Bang Theory, however, nor The New Adventures of Old Christine. And as I said, HBO's great comedies such as Eastbound & Down, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Flight of the Conchords and Bored to Death all came up empty. They got outshined in comedy acting nods by Showtime. Take that. Among supporting actresses, funny turns from Jane Lynch (Glee) and Jane Adams (Hung) also earned recognition. Here are the TV acting nominees in comedy:

ACTORS: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), David Duchovny (Californication), Thomas Jane (Hung), Matthew Morrison (Glee)

ACTRESSES: Toni Collette (The United States of Tara), Courteney Cox (Cougar Town), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Lea Michele (Glee)

And to cheer you up, at least we know Ricky Gervais will be hosting. Here's the ad NBC began airing in the past week. They're now on YouTube. Welcome to 2000-late, NBC. Roll it!
