It’s Russell Brand week in America (specifically NYC)

Your imagination is not playing tricks on you this week. That probably is British rapscallion Russell Brand you see on your TV screens. Brand's first Comedy Central hour special debuted Sunday night (re-airs this coming Friday, March 13), his memoir, My Booky Wook, arrives on American bookshelves Tuesday, and he has a live date March 12 in NYC at the Manhattan Center. All of which means even more of Brand on the promotional circuit (last week on Leno, tonight on Letterman, later this week on Fallon, plus other daytime talkers likely). Several clips from Russell Brand's Comedy Central available for viewing after the jump! Essential background reading: My view of Russell Brand's taping from the audience. CBS.com will Heckle U during March Madness

We always frown upon heckling in live comedy, but when it comes to college basketball? Just keep it clean. And also, know your target — you don't want to give the opposition the inspiration it needs (not that we have learned that from personal trash-talking experience, mind you, ahem). CBS is your TV home for the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournaments, and this year, in addition to wall-to-wall coverage on TV and online (and naturally, a big ol' Facebook bracket contest), they also have turned to stand-up comedians Owen Benjamin and Kirk Fox for a Web series called Heckle U. Benjamin stars as Chance, a professional heckler. Fox is his sidekick. Chris Wylde and Bil Dwyer also appear in this teaser, which also asks you to enter a contest to win a trip to Vegas or a 42" LCD TV. The first full episodes should debut in concert with the tourney itself on Thursday, March...

March Madness, NYC comedy style

We're still another week or so before the NCAA's March Madness kicks off, but in just two days, 64 comedians will begin their own march to glory in New York City in the third annual 2009 March Comedy Madness at Carolines. Julian McCullough won in 2007; Reese Waters last year. The winner gets a cash prize, a weekend of paid gigs at Carolines, and if past years are a guide, an interview with ABC's Good Morning America (online edition) and further exposure. The concept was brought to reality two years ago by Josh Filipowski from Like2Laugh and Bryan Kennedy, a stand-up then running Carolines New Class Clowns. After scouting and booking the 64-comic tourney the first two years, they opened up the process in 2009 to the Internets, and allowed everyone to vote for their favorite up-and-comers. The seven top runners-up from 2008 automatically had their return tickets booked (Dan Hirshon, David Baker, J-L Cauvin, Liz Miele, Pat O'Rourke, Rob O'Reilly and Ryan Reiss). You can find the remaining 57 at-large comedians who made the cut here. They'll get matched up in head-to-head bracket competition. In the first round at 9:30 p.m. March 11, comedians will perform one minute each in head-to-head matchups, advancing to the next bracket based on audience response. Subsequent Wednesday nights narrow the field, with two rounds each on March 25 and the finals. Strategy certainly...
