Most comedy clubs go dark for fireworks

On the Fourth of July, most comedy clubs across the United States went dark, figuring customers more likely would stay outside to barbecue and watch the colorful kablooie of fireworks tonight. Here is the view from my rooftop in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill of the start of the 2008 Macy’s fireworks display over the East River, with lower Manhattan’s skyline in the background. Not even a light rain and clouds could completely dampen the show. In the spirit of Independence Day, please be sure to go to a comedy show this weekend and honor our comedians who exercise their First Amendment rights to free speech onstage. Just click on my national roundup of comedy clubs — This week in comedy clubs — to find a club and headliner in your area. FYI: They’ll be speaking. You’ll be listening, laughing and taking care of the freedom to assemble part. Enjoy!
